Earthquakes Impact Santorini: Schools Closed, Precautions Urged
Greek authorities have issued safety warnings on the popular Aegean island of Santorini following a series of earthquakes over the past few days. In response to the increased seismic activity, the civil protection ministry has advised schools to close on Monday, February 3, and has urged residents and tourists to avoid two small ports and crowded indoor spaces.
The tremors, which reached a magnitude of 4.3, were recorded on Friday and Saturday in the area between Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos. Additional earthquakes, measuring between 2.8 and 4.5, were also reported on Sunday morning, though they caused no damage.
While the civil protection ministry emphasized that the activity is not linked to volcanic eruptions, it has implemented precautionary measures to ensure public safety. Authorities have specifically recommended that people stay away from the small port of Ammoudi and the harbor of Fira, which primarily serves cruise ships. Both areas are typically crowded with tourists, making them potentially more vulnerable during such events.
Santorini, one of Greece’s top tourist destinations, has a history of seismic activity. The island was shaped by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history around 1600 BC, and the last volcanic eruption in the area occurred in 1950. Despite the recent tremors, there is no immediate threat of a volcanic eruption.
Greece is situated on multiple fault lines and frequently experiences earthquakes, which can range in magnitude from mild tremors to more significant quakes. Local officials continue to monitor the situation, and residents and tourists are advised to stay informed and follow safety guidelines.
As of now, there have been no reports of serious damage or injuries, but authorities are remaining cautious. The government has urged the public to stay vigilant and adhere to the recommended safety measures as a precaution.
