Several people have died and a number of others have been injured after a coach carrying Dutch tourists overturned on a mountain road in eastern Switzerland, police have said.
The crash happened at around 16:45 local time on Thursday on the road between the Alpine villages of Susch and Zernez, in the canton of Graubünden, close to the Swiss National Park in the Engadine valley.
Police said the coach had been travelling from Zernez towards Susch when it struck a guardrail and overturned. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
Graubünden cantonal police said in a statement that “several people died in the coach crash in Susch," adding that several others were injured.
Several ambulances and five helicopters were sent to the scene to assist with the rescue effort, according to Swiss media. Footage from the scene showed the overturned coach lying on its side on an embankment beside the road, with emergency crews working around it.
There were 49 people on board the bus in total: 48 passengers and the driver. A spokeswoman for the General Dutch Association of Travel Companies (ANVR), speaking on behalf of tour operator OAD, confirmed that all of the passengers were Dutch nationals.
The coach had left the Netherlands earlier in the week and was on a day trip to Switzerland from Austria at the time of the crash.
Graubünden police have set up a hotline for relatives and consulates seeking information about the crash.
The cause of the accident has not yet been established. Authorities said they were investigating the circumstances that led the coach to hit the barrier and leave the road, and have not commented on road conditions or the driver's condition at the time.
The Dutch government said it was in contact with Swiss authorities, and further details, including an updated casualty figure, are expected as the identification process continues.
