Switzerland aims to deepen its economic partnership with Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said during his first official visit to the country. The trip marks the first stop on his wider tour of Central Asia.
“Switzerland values its partnership with Azerbaijan,” Cassis wrote on X. “We aim to deepen our cooperation in trade, innovation and economic ties.”
Cassis, who also serves as Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), said he wanted to use the role to help promote dialogue, stability and prosperity across the South Caucasus.
“Advancing dialogue, peace, stability and prosperity in the South Caucasus,” was his goal, he added.
During his visit, Cassis met Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. The pair discussed joint efforts within the OSCE to promote regional security, Cassis said.
He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives during Azerbaijan’s struggle to restore its independence by laying flowers at the Alley of Martyrs memorial in Baku.
“Switzerland and Azerbaijan enjoy strong bilateral ties,” Cassis added.
Switzerland was one of the first countries to recognise Azerbaijan after it gained independence. Next year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In a separate interview with Azerbaijan’s state news agency, Azertac, Cassis described the peace process between Baku and Yerevan as a significant opportunity.
“The progress towards peace with Armenia creates new opportunities for the entire region, including for stability, connectivity and economic cooperation.
“Azerbaijan is an important partner for Switzerland in the South Caucasus and a key link between Europe and Asia, with a growing role as a regional hub," he said.
Cassis also highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in supporting Europe’s energy security in the Azertac interview, published on Monday.
“[Azerbaijan’s] contribution helps reduce dependence on a single supplier and supports a more stable and diversified energy supply,” he said.
Cassis's next stop on his Central Asia tour is Turkmenistan.
