A Russian ballistic missile strike in Ukraine’s Kyiv region has killed 10 people and injured nearly 100 others at an event involving representatives of the country’s defence industry.
The attack took place on Friday at a site near the Ukrainian capital where a defence industry event was being held.
Ukraine’s Emergency Services said rescue operations had been completed, with teams searching through rubble at the site, which was located near residential buildings.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russia for the attack, calling it an act of “terror”. However, he also criticised the decision to hold a large gathering linked to weapons development near civilian areas during wartime.
The event was hosted by a drone manufacturers’ association and included representatives from Ukraine’s defence sector.
Ukraine’s Council of Defence Industry said the missile hit a location where defence industry representatives were present, while stressing that it was not the organiser of the event.
Ukraine’s prosecutor general has opened a criminal investigation into possible failures in organising and securing the event.
The missile strike came amid a wider wave of Russian attacks.
In the eastern city of Sloviansk, a Russian aerial bomb killed five people and injured others, according to regional officials.
Additional strikes were reported in the Sumy region, where a drone attack killed two people, and in Zaporizhzhia, where a strike caused a fire at a shopping centre and injured several people.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war, which began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Iran and the United States remain at loggerheads over efforts to agree a permanent end to the war in the Gulf, according to a senior Iranian source who said there had been no progress in talks to revive the interim deal agreed in June and define a timeframe to implement it.
