Poland has proposed a trilateral partnership with the U.S. and Ukraine to jointly manufacture Patriot missile interceptors, Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said after meetings in Washington. The plan aims to ensure production takes place in a secure location.
The proposal follows U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement at the NATO summit in Ankara that Washington would grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors.
Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said Poland had offered to join the project to help ensure production takes place in a safe location.
"We proposed trilateral cooperation involving the United States, Ukraine and Poland because the priority is securing the production process and ensuring it takes place in a safe location," she told reporters.
She added that Patriot interceptors are in demand worldwide, making Poland's participation in their co-production valuable beyond supporting Ukraine.
Discussions on the proposal will now continue between the three countries.
During meetings at the Pentagon and the U.S. State Department, Sobkowiak-Czarnecka also argued that Poland should host a European maintenance centre for Lockheed Martin's PAC-3 Patriot missiles.
The United States announced during the NATO summit that it intends to establish a maintenance facility for Patriot missiles in Europe. The Polish deputy minister said the country's expanding defence industry, together with its geographic and strategic position, made it a strong candidate.
She also discussed expanding the U.S. military presence in Poland, saying the Polish government has already approved a cabinet resolution and is preparing legislation to finance infrastructure for a potential new U.S. military base.
According to Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, a Pentagon working group has already been established under Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby to advance the project.
However, any final decision on additional U.S. troop deployments will ultimately rest with President Trump.
The deputy minister said she also continued discussions in Washington on a potential additional US$4 billion U.S. Foreign Military Financing loan for Poland to purchase American defence equipment.
She said she hoped the agreement could be signed within the coming weeks.
She added that Poland's participation in the European Union's SAFE defence financing mechanism would not prevent Warsaw from continuing to procure military equipment from the United States.
Poland has been one of Ukraine's strongest military supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, although bilateral relations have periodically been strained by historical disputes.
