A federal judge in Seattle has blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship, calling it "blatantly unconstitutional." Signed on January 20, the order sought to deny U.S. citizenship to children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.
The ruling follows legal challenges from four Democratic-led states, civil rights groups, and attorneys general from 22 states, all arguing that the executive order violates the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause.
The Trump administration has vowed to appeal the decision. If upheld, the blocked order would have denied citizenship to over 150,000 newborns annually, subjecting them to deportation and denial of benefits like Social Security and employment.
