U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner by Secret Service agents after a 31 year old suspect attempted to storm event.
Trump and his wife were evacuated from the Hilton hotel in Washington DC where the annual dinner was taking place after hearing a gunshot outside and returned to the White House. The shooter did not enter the ballroom and was apprehended in a hotel corridoor after rushing past Secret Service personnel, catching them off-guard at first.
The press pack and officials attending in the room was safe and followed protocol to stay down and hide under the table until it was declared safe.
One Secret Service official was shot but was saved by his bulletproof vest and is hospital receiving care. The suspect is in a different hospital being assessed and will be charged with offences on Monday, police authorities said in a press conference after the shooting.
Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesman, said the service was investigating the incident.
"We have no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved", DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
In a press conference back at the White House with senior members of the U.S. administration, Trump said "a man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service". Referring to the suspect "he charged from 50 yards away, so he was very far away from the room. He was moving. He was really moving".

The event has been postponed until a later date, according to Trump. Police officials say the shooter was a guest at the hotel.
It was the first time Trump has attended the major event in his presidency, having snubbed the event in his first term and not attending last year.
Update: The police have identified the shooter as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, and he will appear in court on Monday.
