Tram crashes in central Milan, killing two and injuring dozens

Two people were killed and around 40 injured when a tram derailed in central Milan on Friday (27 Februrary), a spokesperson for local firefighters said.

The tram, one of the newest models in operation in the city, came off the tracks in Via Vittorio Veneto, one of Milan’s main thoroughfares and crashed into the window of a shop, fire service spokesperson Vittorio Di Giacomo told Reuters.

Local emergency services said 13 ambulances, along with dozens of fire crews and police vehicles, were dispatched to the scene.

Civil protection teams set up a tent to assist the injured, according to a Reuters eyewitness.

Lombardy’s welfare assessor, Guido Bertolaso, confirmed that one person had died and another was in a serious condition, according to the Italian news agency LaPresse.
