Two people were killed and around 40 injured when a tram derailed in central Milan on Friday (27 February), a spokesperson for the local fire service said.

The tram, one of the newest models in operation in the city, came off the tracks in Via Vittorio Veneto, one of Milan’s main thoroughfares and crashed into a shop window, fire service spokesperson Vittorio Di Giacomo told Reuters.

Local emergency services said 13 ambulances, along with dozens of fire crews and police vehicles, were dispatched to the scene.

Civil protection teams set up a tent to assist the injured, according to a Reuters eyewitness.

Milan’s transport company, ATM, said in a statement it was "deeply shocked", expressed sympathy to those affected and was working with authorities to establish the cause of the derailment.

Lombardy’s welfare assessor, Guido Bertolaso, had earlier confirmed that one person had died and another was in a serious condition, the Italian news agency LaPresse reported. Fire officials later said the death toll had risen to two.
