The death toll from a landfill collapse in the central Philippines has risen to four, an official confirmed on Saturday, as rescue teams continued their efforts to locate dozens still missing.

The Binaliw landfill in Cebu City collapsed on Thursday, where 110 workers were present at the time. Several buildings and facilities within the landfill were also damaged during the collapse.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival posted on Facebook on Saturday, stating that the death toll had increased to four and that 12 others had been taken to hospital.

"Authorities confirmed ... signs of life have been detected in certain areas, requiring further careful excavation and the use of a more advanced 50-ton crane," Archival said.

A total of 36 people were reported missing according to a tally made on Friday. There was no immediate update on the number of missing individuals.

Families of the missing workers remained hopeful on Saturday that they would be found alive.

Jerahmey Espinoza, whose husband is among the missing, visited the landfill in the hope of finding him.

"They haven’t found him or located him since the disaster. We're still hopeful that he's alive," Espinoza said.
