Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that an individual had attempted to break into his Ohio residence by hammering on the windows, noting that he and his family were not at home at the time.

Vance posted on X that he believed an intruder had tried to enter his home and expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and Cincinnati police for their swift response. He requested that media outlets refrain from publishing images of the property damaged during the incident, citing concern for his children’s safety.

Earlier reports, citing an unnamed law enforcement official, said authorities were investigating the incident and had taken one person into custody. The Secret Service was not immediately available for comment.

Vance’s statement follows a series of politically motivated attacks on elected officials in the country. Last June, a Minnesota state assemblywoman and her husband were fatally shot, while in April a man set fire to the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. A similar 2022 incident involved an intruder attacking the former Speaker of the House of Representatives’ husband at their San Francisco residence.

The investigation into the attempted break-in at Vance’s home is ongoing.
