One person was killed and another critically injured on Sunday after two helicopters collided mid-air in the U.S. state of New Jersey, authorities said.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C helicopter collided near Hammonton Municipal Airport at around 11:25 a.m. local time.

Police said both helicopters crash-landed, with one aircraft catching fire. One person died at the scene, while the other was rescued from the wreckage and taken to hospital in critical condition.

The FAA confirmed that only the pilots were on board each helicopter.

“The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation and will provide updates as they become available,” the agency added.
