Russia plans to modernise its nuclear triad, strengthen ground forces, and develop a universal air defence system as part of its new State Armament Programme for 2027–2036, the Kremlin announced on Friday.

“Special attention is being paid to building up the capabilities of the ground forces, maintaining and modernising the nuclear triad, developing a universal air defence system, and increasing the export potential of Russian weapons and equipment,” the statement said.

The programme, approved every five years by the Russian president, provides a long-term plan for the development, production, and maintenance of military hardware and weapons in combat-ready condition. It also considers future threats to national security.

The 2027–2036 cycle has been calculated and is ready for official approval, with goals including systematic re-equipment of the armed forces based on combat experience and global security challenges.

President Vladimir Putin recently stated that Russia’s nuclear forces are 92 per cent modernised, claiming no other country has reached a comparable level. This announcement follows reports earlier this month that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile system has entered combat duty in Belarus.
