A major incident has been declared in the English city of Derby after police evacuated around 200 homes and arrested two men on suspicion of explosives offences.

Derbyshire Police said an “evacuation zone” was established after officers acted on intelligence about materials found at an address. A man in his forties and another in his fifties remain in custody.

Authorities stressed there is no link to terrorism, saying the operation is purely precautionary.

“This is not being investigated as a terrorism incident; there is no wider risk to the community, and the evacuations are a precaution to ensure the safety of those in the area,” a spokesperson said.

Residents within the cordoned-off zone have been advised to prepare to be away from their homes for up to 24 hours and to ensure they have any essential medication or arrangements for pets.

A rest centre has been set up for displaced residents. Police officers will be knocking on all properties in the area and have asked anyone who leaves before being contacted to notify the force.

Further updates will be posted on the Derbyshire Constabulary Facebook page and the news section of the force’s website.
