Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation on Saturday to discuss the situation in Gaza and the wider region, the Kremlin said.

In a statement, the Kremlin said a “thorough exchange of views took place on the situation in the Middle East, including the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the exchange of detainees, the current status of Iran’s nuclear programme, and issues contributing to further stabilisation in Syria.”

Since October 2023, Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed more than 69,000 people, mostly women and children, and reduced much of the enclave to rubble.

A ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel came into effect on 10 October. The first phase of the agreement includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
