China has completed the first phase of its 6G technology trials, a key step in its bid to lead the global push toward next-generation telecommunications networks.
The announcement shows growing momentum behind Beijing’s efforts to shape the standards and industrial ecosystem for 6G, even as commercial rollout remains years away.
Officials said the initial trial phase focused on validating core technical capabilities expected to anchor future 6G systems, including ultra-low latency links, high-frequency spectrum use, integrated space-air-ground connectivity and strengthened security frameworks. Researchers also examined early applications ranging from autonomous manufacturing to immersive, real-time holographic communication.
The test results demonstrated “notable progress” across several fields, according to project leaders, and pave the way for the next round of system-level and high-capacity experiments. China launched its national 6G research initiative in 2019, drawing in major state-backed institutes, universities and telecom companies including Huawei, ZTE and China Mobile to coordinate development.
Global competition around 6G continues to sharpen as governments and industries look to secure advantages in the networks expected to support advanced computing, intelligent devices and new industrial applications. While experts expect commercial 6G deployment around 2030, early standard-setting work is seen as crucial to shaping future markets and technologies.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the second phase of trials will broaden testing to cross-industry scenarios and contribute to ongoing international discussions on 6G standards. It added that China aims to engage more closely in global research partnerships as it works to present itself as an influential player in the next wave of telecom innovation.
