Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday officially declared open the 15th National Games of the People’s Republic of China, marking the start of the nation’s premier multi-sport event that brings together thousands of athletes from across the country.

Held at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Guangzhou, the grand opening ceremony blended modern technology with traditional Chinese culture, symbolizing China’s fusion of innovation and heritage.

The show opened with dazzling visual effects powered by virtual reality  and augmented reality technologies, transforming the arena into a dynamic panorama of Guangdong’s cultural icons and scenic landmarks. Robots playing ancient Chinese instruments filled the stadium with melodious sounds, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Performers took to the stage with the region’s famous Yingge dance,  a spirited folk performance known for its drumbeats and colorful costumes , while martial artists demonstrated Wing Chun, the southern Chinese fighting style popularized worldwide. The combination of traditional artistry and futuristic flair captivated the audience and set an energetic tone for the games ahead.

In his opening remarks, President Xi highlighted the importance of sports in strengthening national unity, improving public health, and fostering a spirit of perseverance and excellence. He emphasized that the National Games serve not only as a platform for athletic competition but also as a celebration of the country’s progress in building a “strong sports nation.”

More than 12,000 athletes from all 31 provincial-level regions, the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, and the People’s Liberation Army are expected to compete in this edition of the Games. Events will range from athletics and swimming to new additions such as e-sports and breakdancing, reflecting changing interests and youth participation in sports.

This year’s National Games are co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao and the first time the event is jointly organized by the three regions,  symbolizing deeper integration within the Greater Bay Area. Organizers said the Games will also promote green, smart, and inclusive development, with digital ticketing, low-carbon venues, and accessible facilities for all participants.

As fireworks illuminated the Guangzhou skyline, the opening ceremony concluded with a mass performance celebrating teamwork and determination which are values that echo China’s national goals. The event showed the country’s ambition to combine athletic excellence with cultural confidence and technological innovation on the global level.
