Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez was involved in a fatal road accident early Tuesday in Italy’s Como province after his vehicle struck a man in an electric wheelchair, local police said.
According to investigators, the accident happened when the wheelchair unexpectedly entered the roadway.
“The car driven by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez collided with a man in an electric wheelchair who was travelling along a cycle path next to a road in the province of Como,” police told Reuters.
"Martinez stopped his car in order to help the man, who died before the arrival of the ambulance."
Authorities say that investigation into the incident is still ongoing. It is unclear whether Martinez has been taken into custody officially following the incident.
Inter Milan have not commented on the incident but it cancelled a news conference that was scheduled for Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's home game against Fiorentina.
