Hurricane Melissa has intensified into a Category 4 storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds reaching 140 mph (220 km/h).
According to the NHC, the hurricane was located around 280 miles (450 kilometres) from Guantánamo, Cuba.
The agency warned that catastrophic flash floods and landslides are likely across parts of southern Hispaniola and Jamaica.
Melissa is forecast to remain a major hurricane as it approaches Jamaica late Monday or early Tuesday, before moving towards southeastern Cuba on Tuesday evening, the Miami-based forecaster said.
