Four family members of Republican Illinois governor candidate Darren Bailey — his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren — have been killed in a helicopter crash in Montana, his campaign said.
The crash occurred on Wednesday in Montana, Bailey’s campaign confirmed in a statement released on Thursday. The victims were the son and daughter-in-law of the former state senator, along with their two children.
“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them,” the statement said.
Bailey, a Republican farmer and former Illinois state senator, previously ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022 against Democrat J.B. Pritzker. He is seeking the Republican nomination again for next year’s election.
