The leaders of 19 European Union nations have called on the bloc to launch a renewed effort to “review, reduce and restrain” legislation in order to boost economic competitiveness, according to a letter seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Addressed to European Council President Antonio Costa, the letter was signed by figures including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“We wish to safeguard the European Union for what it represents – freedom, security, and prosperity. To achieve this, its direction must change – not marginally, but fundamentally,” the letter stated, ahead of Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels.
