North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to further strengthen his country’s alliance with Russia, in a letter to President Vladimir Putin marking his birthday and praising his leadership.

“I have no doubt that the allied relations between our two countries will continue unwaveringly into the future, thanks to the warm friendship and close comradeship between us,” Kim wrote.

He reaffirmed his backing for Russia’s “just struggle” to defend its national sovereignty — a clear reference to the conflict in Ukraine — and vowed to remain committed to implementing the treaty the two leaders signed last year, according to the state news agency KCNA.
