At least five people have died following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the Philippines on Tuesday, authorities report.

In northern Cebu, a sports complex collapsed during a basketball game, leaving several people dead or injured. Four of the casualties were members of the rescue team responding to the collapse, including one Bureau of Fire Protection officer and three Philippine Coast Guard personnel. The fifth victim was a child trapped in rubble at a separate location.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake at magnitude 7.0, later revising it to 6.9. The epicentre was identified in northern Cebu at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) briefly issued a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.

Several buildings were damaged or partially collapsed, including the Sts. Peter and Paul Church on Bantayan Island and a fast-food outlet in Bogo, Cebu. Schools in Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Talisay, Minglanilla, Consolacion, and Liloan were closed on Wednesday as a precaution.

An ammonia leak at a beverage plant in Mandaue was contained by firefighters, while authorities remain on standby for possible evacuations.
