A dormitory school building under renovation collapsed in Indonesia’s East Java province, leaving one student dead and at least 83 others injured, local authorities said Monday.
Police and search-and-rescue teams reported that the incident took place in the town of Sidoarjo, where the renovation was being carried out without authorization.
According to initial findings, one student was killed, while 83 injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Officials said there are concerns the death toll could rise as investigations continue. A formal inquiry into the collapse has been launched.
