An Italian navy vessel dispatched to support an international aid flotilla heading to Gaza overnight is not expected to engage in military action, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday.

Speaking to journalists in New York during the U.N. General Assembly, Meloni explained that her government had suggested transferring the flotilla’s aid to Cyprus and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to mitigate potential risks.

She added that Italy is awaiting a response from the Gaza flotilla organizers regarding this proposed compromise.
