The Russian Ministry of Defence announced on Monday that its forces had taken control of Kalynivske, a settlement in Ukraine's south eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.
However, Ukrainian military spokesperson Oleksiy Belskyi swiftly refuted this claim, stating that Russian troops had briefly infiltrated the area, raised a flag for propaganda purposes, and were subsequently driven out by Ukrainian forces.
Belskyi explained that such tactics involve small Russian groups infiltrating villages, unfurling a flag, filming it, and then reporting the area as "liberated." He emphasised that these settlements remain under Ukrainian control.
Despite Russia's assertions, Ukrainian forces maintain a robust defence in the region. Belskyi noted that while Russian forces have occupied five villages in Dnipropetrovsk, they have failed to make significant advances, with Ukrainian troops holding their positions firmly.
The Dnipropetrovsk region continues to be a secondary yet strategically significant front in the broader conflict.
Ukrainian forces say they employ active defence tactics, including counterattacks and artillery strikes, to disrupt Russian operations and prevent further encroachment.
