U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says its forces have killed Omar Abdul Qader, a senior Islamic State member, in a raid in Syria on 19 September.

Qader was accused of planning attacks against the United States. CENTCOM said his death removes a direct threat to American security and weakens the group’s ability to organise future operations.

Admiral Brad Cooper, who serves as the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), praised the American forces who carried out the raid and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continuing the pursuit of militant groups across the world.

No details were given about the raid’s exact location or other casualties.

ISIS no longer controls territory in Syria and Iraq but remains active through underground cells targeted by U.S. and partner operations.
