U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Britain late on Tuesday for his second state visit, where the UK and U.S. plan to announce major investment deals and strengthen their “special relationship,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.
Before Trump’s arrival, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves launched a “Transatlantic taskforce” to deepen cooperation between the two nations’ financial sectors.
Trump will be officially welcomed by King Charles on Wednesday at Windsor Castle, where a day of royal pageantry will include a carriage tour, a gun salute, and a state banquet. Starmer hopes the high-profile events will help both leaders focus on geopolitics and investment, following a week of personal and political challenges.
The visit comes shortly after the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an ally of Trump, and amid Starmer’s recent dismissals of his deputy and the UK ambassador to the U.S. over ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Starmer aims to showcase Britain as a destination for U.S. investment, with executives including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman attending. Microsoft has pledged more than $30 billion in investments over the next four years, while Google plans £5 billion ($6.8 billion) for a new data centre near London to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) services.
On Thursday, Starmer will host Trump at Chequers to discuss trade, tariffs on steel and aluminium, the Ukraine conflict, and the situation in Gaza. Both delegations will be largely shielded from anti-Trump protests planned in the UK.
A Starmer spokesperson described the visit as “an historic opportunity at a crucial time for global stability and security” and said discussions will cover shared challenges and opportunities in the “deep and unparalleled” UK-US relationship.
