A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, but no tsunami alert was issued, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at 7.4 with a depth of 39.5 kilometres (24.5 miles). Meanwhile, Germany’s Research Centre for Geosciences measured it at 7.1 with a shallower depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles).

The tsunami centre had initially cautioned that a tsunami threat was possible following the tremor. However, it later confirmed no danger.

In Japan, which lies to the southwest of Kamchatka, broadcaster NHK reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency had not issued any tsunami warning.
