The village of Tarsin in the Marra Mountains of Central Darfur has been completely destroyed by a landslide triggered by heavy rains.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) said the entire population was killed, with only one survivor. The group added that the village’s renowned citrus orchards were also wiped out.

SLM/A has appealed to international organizations and the United Nations to help recover the bodies buried under the debris.

Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi described the disaster as “a humanitarian tragedy that exceeds the borders of the region,” urging international aid agencies to intervene urgently.

The Sudanese government has also mourned the victims and pledged to mobilize all available resources to assist those affected.

The disaster struck as the country remains engulfed in war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to the UN and local sources, more than 20,000 people have been killed and 14 million displaced since April 2023. Research by U.S. universities, however, estimates the real death toll at around 130,000.
