Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has ordered a reinforcement of the “Relámpago del Catatumbo” operation, extending it to Tachira state under Peace Zone One.
Interior and Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello said that in the first phase, an additional 15,000 troops will be deployed on the Venezuelan side of the border.
Peace Zones Two and Three will follow in subsequent phases. Cabello stressed that all measures are being carried out along the border with Venezuela’s neighbouring country, Colombia.
The minister added that Caracas hopes Bogotá will take similar steps to secure its side of the border and prevent the movement of armed groups.
“The best guarantee of peace on the border is for each side to guard its own area as it should,” he said.
