Judge Frank Caprio, the warm-hearted municipal court judge who captured global attention with his empathy and humour, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 following pancreatic cancer.
Known affectionately as “America’s nicest judge,” Caprio earned his reputation through the viral courtroom show 'Caught in Providence', where his compassion turned the courtroom into a beacon of humanity. Regardless of the offense, whether minor traffic violations or personal hardship, Caprio approached each case with an understanding touch and a firm belief in redemption.
Caprio had served on the Providence Municipal Court bench for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2023 after decades of showing that justice and kindness aren’t mutually exclusive. His television show, which aired from 2018 to 2020, received multiple Daytime Emmy nominations and attracted a social media following numbering in the millions.
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2023, Caprio shared his diagnosis publicly, frequently updating his supporters. Just a day before his passing, he posted a heartfelt video from his hospital bed, asking followers for their prayers, a gesture that drew an outpouring of support.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honour, calling Caprio “a symbol of empathy on the bench” whose “warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark”.
