Two wildfires in Türkiye’s northwestern Canakkale province destroyed dozens of homes and forced around 1,000 people to evacuate, officials said.
Murat Kurum, Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, said on X that damage assessments had begun, with 43 buildings in Sacakli village severely damaged or destroyed. Evaluations in other affected villages are ongoing.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said nearly 1,000 people were moved to safe areas and confirmed that the fires were fully contained by Saturday.
Photographs published by Milliyet daily showed rows of burnt-out homes and scorched landscapes in the affected villages.
The fires also temporarily disrupted air and maritime traffic along the Dardanelles Strait, a strategic waterway linking the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara and a key route for international shipping.
