A lightning strike measuring 829 kilometres observed in the United States in October 2017 has been confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as the longest recorded lightning event.

According to the WMO statement, the lightning was not included in the initial analyses conducted that year but was later identified and the data re-examined.

The lightning stretched from eastern Texas to Kansas City in Missouri and is now recognised as a world record.

The distance covered is equivalent to the stretch between Paris and Venice. The previous record was a 768-kilometre lightning strike also recorded in the U.S. in April 2020.
