Trump rejected Macron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN.
U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland on Friday for brief trade-related meetings and a stop at his golf resort. Speaking to reporters, Trump dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent pledge to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
“That’s what he does,” Trump said. “That’s up to him. I’m with the United States. I’m not with France.”
When pressed about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Trump blamed Hamas: “I think it’s terrible what happened with Hamas. They tapped everybody along... we’ll see what response Israel has to that. But it’s getting to be that time.”
Macron had said Thursday that France will move toward recognizing a Palestinian state in a bid to restart peace efforts in the region, a move Trump made clear he does not support.
