A tenth resident has died following the deadly fire that tore through the Gabriel House assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, officials confirmed Thursday.

Brenda Cropper, 66, died in hospital late Wednesday after days in critical condition. Her death brings the toll from Sunday night’s blaze to 10. Most victims were over the age of 60. The fire, which broke out on the second floor, left dozens injured and forced some residents to hang from windows, crying for help. Authorities say the cause is still under investigation, but it does not appear suspicious.

While official inspection records since 2019 show no violations, disturbing accounts from former staff and residents have raised concerns. Former worker Jenn Marley described pest infestations, dirty bathrooms, and undercooked food. “Hot dogs and a teaspoon of beans. I’m sorry, my cat eats more than that,” she said.

Union officials say firefighter staffing levels were too low to respond effectively. The city has promised to boost shift numbers, first with overtime and later with new hires.
