Türkiye has extended condolences to the families of those killed in severe flooding in the U.S. state of Texas.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives caused by the recent floods in Texas, USA,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

The ministry expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and solidarity with the American people.

At least 27 people have died since heavy rains hit the Guadalupe River late Thursday, pushing water levels to more than 11.8 metres — the second-highest flood in the region since 1987.

The sheriff's office called it “an extremely active scene, countywide,” while spokesperson Clint Morris said the scale of the disaster could be “once-in-a-lifetime.”

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, currently acting as governor, said 400 rescue personnel had been deployed.
