Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Barcelona in a heated El Clasico on Sunday, ending a four-match losing run against their arch-rivals and extending their lead at the top of LaLiga.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a composed close-range finish after being played through by Bellingham. Barcelona levelled in the 38th minute when Fermin Lopez punished an error from Arda Guler.
Real restored their advantage just five minutes later, with Bellingham tapping in from close range after an electric run and cross by Vinicius Jr. The hosts had several chances to extend their lead but were repeatedly denied by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who also saved Mbappe’s penalty early in the second half.
Barcelona rarely tested Real keeper Thibaut Courtois after the break and finished the match with ten men when Pedri received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Aurelien Tchouameni in stoppage time.
The final moments were full of tension as Vinicius Jr reacted angrily to being substituted by manager Xabi Alonso, storming down the tunnel before returning to the bench. He was later involved in a heated scuffle between both sets of players, forcing police intervention to prevent a full-scale altercation.
The result lifted Real to 27 points, five clear of second-placed Barcelona. Having lost four consecutive meetings across three competitions, Real entered the clash in need of a statement victory to affirm Alonso’s project as manager.
“I’m very happy for the lads. They needed this feeling of winning a big match,” Alonso told reporters. “We know it’s still October and early in the season, but we wanted to feel good about ourselves—and that’s exactly what we’ve done today.”
VAR drama and missed chances
The match began with controversy as referee Cesar Soto Grado overturned an early penalty for Real following a VAR review, ruling that Vinicius Jr had kicked Lamine Yamal while attempting a shot. Moments later, Mbappe had a long-range strike ruled out for offside, despite replays indicating that Barcelona’s Lopez may have been the last to touch the ball.
Dominating the first half-hour with over 75% possession, Real were frustrated by Szczesny’s brilliance as he produced key saves to deny Mbappe, Dean Huijsen and Vinicius Jr. Their persistence finally paid off when Mbappe converted Bellingham’s through ball to open the scoring, though Barcelona equalised soon after against the run of play.
Vinicius Jr then dazzled on the left wing to set up Real’s second goal, dribbling past Frenkie de Jong and Jules Kounde before crossing for Eder Militao, whose header found Bellingham to finish into an empty net.
Real could have wrapped up the match early in the second half after a penalty for Eric Garcia’s handball, but Szczesny produced another fine stop to keep out Mbappe’s spot-kick. Despite controlling possession later on, Barcelona failed to create meaningful chances and saw their frustrations boil over when Pedri was dismissed.
“In the first half, we weren’t sharp enough on the ball, and that’s where they’re very dangerous,” De Jong told DAZN. “In the second half, we controlled the game better but struggled to create anything truly threatening.”
