Armenian foreign minister heads to Tehran for talks on South Caucasus cooperation

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan will travel to Tehran on Sunday (4 October) for talks with Iranian officials, with regional cooperation and Armenia-Iran relations expected to be key topics.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit is part of ongoing consultations between the two countries aimed at “expanding bilateral relations and strengthening regional peace and security”, according to IRIB.

Regional focus

Mirzoyan is expected to discuss developments in the South Caucasus, where Armenia, Azerbaijan and Türkiye remain central to shifting regional dynamics.

The visit comes as Tehran and Yerevan continue regular diplomatic engagement, particularly on regional security, connectivity and cooperation.

Trade and transit links

The diplomatic engagement comes alongside efforts to strengthen economic ties.

Iranian and Armenian officials recently met at the Nordooz border terminal on Thursday, 1 October, to discuss increasing the movement of commercial vehicles, improving customs procedures and expanding transport and logistics capacity, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization said exports to Armenia rose 7.5 per cent to $385 million during the first seven months of 2026, according to IRNA.

Iranian officials also said improvements to customs procedures and infrastructure could eventually raise Nordooz’s capacity to 300 trucks a day.
