On 1 July, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Azerbaijan on a working visit.
"The EU is already Azerbaijan's largest trading partner and biggest investor. Now we want to build on that,” President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said during joint press statements with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
"The resumption of discussions on a new comprehensive agreement is an important step. This can open the road for even more trade between Azerbaijan and the European Union, and we will work together to make progress happen,” she added.
"Energy remains one of the strongest pillars of our partnership,” President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said during joint press statements with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
She noted: "In recent years, Azerbaijan has proven to be a reliable trusted energy partner for Europe."
"Together, we can turn peace on paper into peace in practice. That is why we are working here today together,” President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said during joint press statements with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
"This brings me to my first announcement of today. We want to foster peace through connectivity,” the President of the European Commission emphasised.
"More than 40% of our trade is with member states, and for European Union, Azerbaijan is the main trading partner in the Southern Caucasus,” President Ilham Aliyev said in a joint press statement with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
The head of state emphasised that almost 70% of trade in the South Caucasus is trade with Azerbaijan.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit comes as Azerbaijan plays an increasingly strategic role in Europe's efforts to diversify energy supplies and strengthen connectivity between Europe and Asia.
Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Baku on 1 July, saying the European Union sees a “bright future” for the South Caucasus built on connectivity, peace and prosperity.
