Uzbekistan has reopened its border with Afghanistan for the first time since 2021, the country’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on Tuesday.
Passenger travel has resumed across the Termez-Hairatan bridge, which connects southern Uzbekistan with northern Afghanistan.
Authorities said the crossing allows people to travel directly and safely between the two countries, although visa requirements remain in place.
Officials expect the reopening to boost exports to Afghanistan, which have been steadily rising in recent years, potentially reaching $2.5 billion by 2026.
Uzbekistan closed the border in June 2021 amid concerns over a worsening coronavirus situation in Afghanistan. At the time, tourist visas for Afghan citizens were suspended, with only diplomats, international freight drivers, and returning citizens permitted to cross.
