Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday called on countries to remain committed to the Paris Agreement and to strengthen global efforts against climate change during his address at the UN Climate Summit.
Lula said that Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) provide a roadmap for each country to reduce gas emissions, noting that Brazil is the second nation to update its NDC to continue efforts to end deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.
The President warned against denialism and unilateral approaches, stating: “Walls at borders will not stop droughts or storms. Nature does not bow to bombs. No country stands above another.”
He also stressed that mistrust and denialism in the global fight against climate change undermine democracy and multilateral policies, potentially leading to losses for all nations.
