Ten firefighters have died and 14 others were injured battling a wildfire in Türkiye’s Eskisehir province.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said that 24 firefighters were trapped in the flames after a sudden change in wind direction. The injured were swiftly taken to hospital.
Firefighter Ercan Temel, who witnessed the incident, said on Wednesday, “They were fighting the fire at the top of the hill while we were at the bottom. They tried to escape uphill but were unable to.”
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced that prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, seven wildfires continue to burn across five provinces in central and western Türkiye.
