Afghanistan says its forces have killed 41 fighters and captured 62 others after several days of fighting in eastern Nuristan, accusing Pakistan’s military of helping armed groups cross into Afghan territory.
The Defence Ministry said operations were carried out in Kamdesh district, along the Durand Line. The latest figures are higher than those announced earlier this week, when it said 28 fighters had been killed and 32 captured.
“According to the latest information, in the course of the operations, a total of 41 Shar-o-Fasad and Daesh (ISIS) insurgents were killed, while 62 others were captured alive,” the ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry said Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul was summoned on Tuesday (29 September) and handed a formal protest over the alleged crossing of armed fighters into Nuristan.
It accused Pakistan’s military of supporting the recruitment, organisation, training and equipping of armed groups before directing them across the border into Afghanistan.
“Afghanistan says these actions by the Pakistani military regime constitute a clear violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and are contrary to Islamic, international, humanitarian and good-neighbourly principles,” the statement said.
Pakistan earlier rejected Afghanistan’s allegations regarding the Nuristan fighting as baseless. In a statement on Sunday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting denied any involvement by its security forces or intelligence agencies and said Afghanistan had not provided evidence to support the claims.
“Not a shred of evidence has been produced to substantiate Pakistan’s involvement: no identities, documents, communications, forensic evidence or independent verification,” the ministry said.
