Afghanistan has launched a five-year national health strategy to strengthen healthcare services as the country faces severe funding shortages, rising humanitarian needs and mounting pressure on its health system.
The Ministry of Public Health unveiled the National Health Strategy 2026–2030 in Kabul on Tuesday, describing it as a long-term roadmap to improve healthcare services, strengthen infrastructure and expand access to medical care.
Administrative Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi described the strategy as an important step towards strengthening Afghanistan's health system through long-term planning.
Hanafi said the authorities would invest in healthcare workers and hospitals.
"The Islamic Emirate is committed to strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers, improving hospital infrastructure and equipment, and implementing long-term development plans. Afghanistan’s health sector still requires further development and significant progress has already been made in this area," he said, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
Health Minister Noor Jalal Jalali said the strategy would improve access to healthcare and strengthen the country's medical system.
"Its implementation would expand access to healthcare services, improve the quality of care, and strengthen health infrastructure and human resources. It would also help ensure more equitable and broader access to quality healthcare services," he said, according to the ministry.

The World Health Organization (WHO), which supported the strategy's development, said it focuses on seven priorities, including workforce development, sustainable financing, access to medicines and stronger health information systems.
WHO Representative Dr Edwin Ceniza Salvador said, "A strategy matters only when its impact is felt in people’s daily lives – when a mother can reach safe care, a child receives timely treatment, essential medicines are available and health workers have the support they need."
