Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and China reached nearly $44 billion in 2024
Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov held talks today with Han Chunling, China's newly appointed ambassador to Astana. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, transport and logistics, energy, cultural exchange, and tourism. Both sides highlighted a 9% growth in trade turnover, which totaled $43.8 billion by the end of 2024.
Progress on joint investment initiatives was also reviewed. China ranks among Kazakhstan's top five investors, with 62 projects worth $8.7 billion already completed, creating 11,000 jobs. An additional 55 projects valued at $13.5 billion are currently underway, expected to generate 17,400 jobs. Overall, the investment portfolio between the two countries includes 222 projects, collectively worth more than $60.5 billion.
The meeting also addressed cooperation in the transit and transport sectors. Cargo transportation between the two nations increased by 13% during the first 11 months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 29.3 million tons. To further boost cargo volumes, both sides stressed the need to establish new checkpoints, modernize existing border facilities, and improve cross-border shipping.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration across all key areas of mutual interest.
