Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain have signed an agreement with China to jointly develop a $220 million solar energy project.

According to a written statement from the Egyptian Cabinet, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony in El-Alamein, northern Egypt, for the project titled “Atom Solar Egypt.”

The project will be implemented on a 200,000-square-metre site in the Suhna Industrial Zone, part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone along the Red Sea coast. Construction and testing are expected to be completed within three years.

Once operational, the facility will produce 2 gigawatts of solar panels and a 1-gigawatt energy storage system. The project is expected to create 841 direct jobs.

Chinese company JA Solar will collaborate on the project with Egypt’s AHG, UAE’s Global South Utilities, and Bahrain’s Infinity Capital.
