Anthony Ricco, one of Sean "Diddy" Combs' defense attorneys, has filed to step down from the legal team ahead of his upcoming human trafficking trial, citing an inability to continue effectively representing the hip-hop mogul.
One of the lawyers representing Sean "Diddy" Combs in his ongoing human trafficking case has filed a notice indicating his intention to withdraw from the defense team. Defense attorney Anthony Ricco made the announcement in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, citing that he can no longer effectively serve as counsel for the hip-hop mogul.
Ricco, who is part of the six-member legal team defending Combs, did not provide further details about his decision. The court will need to approve Ricco's request to step down before any action can be taken.
Combs Awaits Trial in May
Combs, 55, faces serious charges related to human trafficking following his September arrest in New York City. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations, which include accusations of using his considerable wealth and influence to coerce female victims and male sex workers into engaging in drug-fueled sexual acts. According to federal prosecutors, Combs also employed blackmail and violence to intimidate and threaten his victims.
The hip-hop mogul remains in custody without bail and is set to stand trial on May 5. In addition to the federal charges, Combs is also facing several sexual assault lawsuits, although one such case involving rapper Jay-Z was recently dropped by the accuser.
No Delay Expected in Trial
Ricco has assured that his decision to leave the defense team will not result in any delays to Combs' upcoming trial. He mentioned that he had discussed his intention with Combs' lead attorney, and emphasized that the trial would proceed as scheduled, despite the change in legal representation.
As the case continues to unfold, all eyes will be on the May trial to see how the charges against the influential music executive will be addressed in the court of law.
