Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, whose name became synonymous with modern elegance and global luxury, has died at the age of 91, his company announced on Thursday, 4 September.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house said in a statement.

Armani had been unwell for some time and was forced to miss Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June, the first time in his decades-long career that he had been absent from one of his own catwalk shows.

Known in Italy as Re Giorgio, King Giorgio, he built an empire that generated around 2.3 billion euros ($2.7 billion) in annual turnover, blending designer flair with sharp business acumen. He was famed for his personal involvement in every aspect of his company, from advertising campaigns to adjusting models’ hair before they stepped onto the runway.

Armani’s work defined an era of understated style, revolutionising the cut of men’s suits and bringing relaxed sophistication to women’s fashion. His influence extended into Hollywood, with stars regularly wearing his designs on the red carpet.

The company said a funeral chamber would be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a private funeral at a later date.
