Türkiye is preparing to sue Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, over age-inappropriate content on social media, Turkish Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has said.
Tekin said that the Turkish government would follow the example of the European Union in taking legal enforcement actions against the social media giant in remarks on Thursday, in Ankara.
Responding to a journalist who noted that there were families who had filed lawsuits against Meta, Tekin said, “Yes, we are also preparing to do so right now. We are also considering filing a lawsuit.”

Tekin said that children were being exposed to content that was “pedagogically inappropriate for their age” on social media, which was “negatively affecting their academic and personal development.”
He added that options for legal enforcement were being looked at by the Türkiye Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Industry.
Tekin said Meta should either make age-inappropriate content inaccessible to children or modify it.
Türkiye implemented a nationwide ban on mobile phones in schools from September 2025. Students must hand in mobile phones and teachers are expected not to bring phones into the classroom.
In April, the European Commission found Meta to be in breach of EU law for failing to prevent children under 13 from using Facebook and Instagram.
Meta said it disagreed with the findings of the two-year investigation and that it had appropriate measures in place.
