The EU Commission signed five major agreements with Africa, securing over €1.2 billion ($1.38 billion) in investments and guarantees, EU President Ursula von der Leyen announced Friday.

The deals were finalized at the Mattei Plan for Africa and the Global Gateway summit, co-hosted by Italy and the EU in Rome. The event brought together representatives from the African Union, African countries, and international development agencies.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Africa will shape the world’s future more than any other continent and stressed Europe’s responsibility to make a positive impact.

Meloni also highlighted ongoing work on initiatives to address debt issues facing African countries.

Von der Leyen said the agreements show how political will and shared vision have turned into real, on-the-ground results.
